Kiteboarding Locations
There are many great kiting locations in the Tampa Bay area. Generaly we teach in shallow flat water near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in the Tampa Bay. But there are great beaches to ride in Pinellas, Manatee, and Sarasota County as well. The places where we teach are the best places for beginners to ride until they feel confident to ride other, more challenging locations. Note: Keep some change or dollar bills handy. These locations require driving through at least one toll plaza. MOST of our lessons will be at locations # 1 and #2, located at the Skyway North rest area kite beach.
Location #1: Direction: NE, E, SE
Skyway NE - this is where we will teach if the wind is blowing out of the NE, E, or SE
Directions: from Bradenton / Sarasota, take I-75 north, then take I-275 north (exit 228) to St. Petersburg, FL. After going over the Sunshine Skyway bridge, take a right at the rest stop exit. Turn right at the bottom of the off-ramp onto the access road, and then take a right onto the beach.
From Tampa / St. Pete, go south on I-275, after the first toll plaza, get in right lane, take rest stop exit on right, then turn left to go under highway, take access road to left (AFTER the highway ramp), right onto the beach.
Location #2: Direction: NW, W, SW
Skyway NW - this is where we will teach if the wind is blowing out of the NW, W, or SW
Directions: from Bradenton / Sarasota, take I-75 north, then take I-275 north (exit 228) to St. Petersburg, FL. After going over the Sunshine Skyway bridge, take a right at the rest stop exit. Turn left at the bottom of the off-ramp and go under the highway, stay right onto access road all the way to the end. Park under trees.
From Tampa / St. Pete, go south on I-275, after the first toll plaza, get in right lane, take rest stop exit on right, at the bottom of the ramp, take a right and go to end of the end. Park under trees.
Location #3: Direction: S (SW-E)
East Beach @ Fort DeSoto - this is where we will teach if the wind is blowing out of the South (SW-E)
Directions: from Bradenton / Sarasota, take I-75 north, then take I-275 north (exit 228) to St. Petersburg, FL. After going over the Sunshine Skyway bridge, take exit 17 to the left, take a left at traffic light onto Pinellas Bayway (FL-682), turn left again to stay on Pinellas Bayway towards Fort Desoto Park. When the road ends in a "T", take a left and go to the end of the road. Park in the grass by the beach.
From Tampa / St. Pete, take I-275 south, take exit 17 to the right, take a right at traffic light onto Pinellas Bayway (FL-682), turn left again to stay on Pinellas Bayway towards Fort Desoto Park. When the road ends in a "T", take a left and go to the end of the road. Park in the grass by the beach.
Location #4: Direction: N (NW-NE)
Directions: from Bradenton /Sarasota, take I-75 north, then take I-275 north (exit 228) to St. Petersburg, FL. After the first toll plaza, get in right lane and exit at first rest stop. Park near picnic tables.
From Tampa / St. Pete, go south on I-275, after going over the Sunshine Skyway, take the first right (rest area), at the bottom of the ramp, turn left under the highway. Park near picnic tables.
